CENTERVILLE CEMETERY
The community of Centerville was located in the Southwest edge of Kiowa County,
between the Wichita Mountains and the North Fork of the Red River. From 1901-1906,
with the abundance of wood, water and grazing land, many homesteaders moved
into the area. Some stayed and others moved on when they could not make it.
On June 25, 1904, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Davis donated a plot of land from the corner
of their farm, just across the road from what became the Centerville Community
for the cemetery.
The first general store was opened by R. E. Powers. In 1913, Dr. E. B. Hibbits
came to centerville and built a 2 story building that housed, on the upper floor,
the Woodmen of the World hall and on the first floor was his medical office,
and drug store. Later, a lodge hall, second Doctor's office, blacksmith shop,
two general stores and a cotton gin opened. In 1909, Warren Dempsey donated
the land for the first school, which he named Shiloh, after the Civil War battle
