built by the early settlers as a place of refuge during the Indian Wars, 1756-1761; occupied by the Whigs (those who favored the colonial cause and independence) from Nov. 22, 1776 to March 17, 1777. The British under the command of Colonel Innes were driven from the fort by the Americans under Col. Edward Hampton, July 16, 1780." |
