WILLIAM CRISP, SR
Born ca 1695 - 1700, NC
Died after 1783, (Will date), Edgecombe Co. NC
William Crisp was born about 1695-1700, probably in North Carolina. So far,
nothing is known of his early life. Hi parents have not been found, although
some researchers believe he is closely related to Benjamin Crisp, Nicholas
Crisp or Jonathan Crisp early settlers in the colonies. He may have been born
after his parents arrived here, or perhaps he was born in England, just prior.
William Crisp was a "person of means". He was a land owner in Edgecombe
County, NC which was divided into Martin and Bertie
also, over time. He appears on land records in that area, both in purchasing
and as witness. It has been found that he was married twice. The name of the
first wife is still a mystery. It is speculated by some researchers that she
was a Mansill, as this name has been handed down
through those children's lines to the late 1880's, a span of about 150 years.
I have found, over the years, the average age for a male to marry in that
era was about 25 years and a female about 15 to 20. So an assumption could
be made that William married first about 1720. Children with his first wife
are as follows. The birthdates listed are from sources,
in most instances, NOT DEEMED RELIABLE, but are given to establish a time
line of sorts. They are not to be counted upon as accurate.

This marriage lasted probably from ca 1720 - ca 1738-40, when apparently
the first Mrs. William Crisp died, either by illness or childbirth, which are
the major causes of death in that era.
Ca 1740, William married Frances ??. He was probably
in the 40 - 45 year old age bracket. Frances was probably about 20, born about
1720, as they had 10 children, who were all grown and married by the time William
made his will in 1783. Frances died ca 1800 after the census, so she could have
been about 80 years old. Frances and William's children and grandchildren are
(and again, the birth dates are NOT DEEMED RELIABLE, but used for a time line).

At this point, there is little to nothing known, or found, regarding some
of his children. Others have been documented by descendents.
